Description:
SKAPC was tapped by the Preservation Foundation of the Harmonie Club, the second oldest social club in NYC, for the façade restoration of its home, an eight-story Beaux-Arts building. Originally designed by Stanford White in the early 1900s, the landmark building is situated in the Upper East Side Historic District. SKAPC employed a “design build” delivery method, enabling the contractors to begin work on the first day of the project. The scope of the renovations included replacing damaged terra cotta units; cleaning and repairing the limestone base, copper standing seam panels and terra cotta surfaces; restoring decorative metal guardrails and window/door grilles; repairing all windows and replacing the wood brick molds in kind; and retro-designing handicap access, among many other restoration projects. The façade now presents the beauty and classic design as originally envisioned. By facilitating a comprehensive restoration rather than simply a “quick fix” to meet the requirements necessary for the City’s Department of Buildings’ Façade Inspection & Safety Program, the Harmonie board and Kratchman team have enhanced the building’s presence within the overall landscape of the block – and breathed new life into the spirt and legacy of this landmark district.
